About Ashland Fiber Network
Founded in the late 1990s, the Ashland Fiber Network (AFN) was built by a group of local innovators determined to take control of Ashland’s telecommunications future. Today, AFN is a community-owned fiber and HFC network that delivers reliable, high-speed connectivity while supporting local businesses, innovation, and the independent spirit that defines our community.
AFN’s infrastructure was designed not only to provide advanced internet services, but also to create opportunities for local providers, empower residents, and showcase the people and ideas that make Ashland unique.
A Community-Owned, Open Access Network
AFN operates on a unique quasi-open access model. The City of Ashland owns, manages, and maintains the fiber network, then partners with locally owned Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Customers can either connect directly with the City or through one of our partner ISPs. This approach gives residents and businesses the flexibility to choose the provider that best fits their needs, whether that’s AFN directly or one of our trusted local partners.
Unlike traditional providers, all revenue generated through AFN stays within the community, supporting local infrastructure, economic growth, and long-term sustainability.

I called AFN on Feb 3rd because I unexpectedly lost my Internet service. A technician named Dena came out and solved the problem within half an hour. (Turns out Charter had installed a filter that hampered data transmission). I was very impressed by how quickly she assessed, diagnosed, and corrected the issue, while maintaining a high level of professionalism and friendliness.
